Bale deserves recognition for his efforts, but they’re wasted on an overly thin plot that has all the familiar twist and turns of a Twilight Zone episode.

Trevor Reznik has not slept for a year. His every waking minute has become an unremitting nightmare of confusion, paranoia, guilt, anxiety and terror – each of which is part of an escalating series of clues that will lead to the source of his mysterious affliction. (Paramount Classics)

The Machinist is a gloomy psychological thriller that pulls you into the story. Christian Bale’s physical transformation is both sickening and intriguing.

However as the story unravels, the film’s interesting desaturated aesthetic becomes a dull sheen because of a generic and predictable plot. The film drags on halfway, emphasizing clues that are obvious from the get-go.

Bale gives a great performance, but it’s wasted on a forgettable story with tricks that you’ve already seen before.
